How to Deep Clean Your House

Wiping your counters nightly and vacuuming every few days is great, but now and then, your home needs a deep clean – one that goes beyond the surface to reduce stubborn allergens, germs, and pollutants.

According to Angi, the average person only deep cleans their home about once per year, likely during a spring cleaning spree.

Ideally, we should all be deep cleaning at least two to three times annually, but that’s easier said than done. True deep cleans are time-consuming and can feel like a burden on your already busy schedule.

At GIGO Clean, we’re on a mission to make cleaning more convenient – and that includes deep cleaning. Our easy-to-use app connects SoCal residents with on-demand cleaning professionals, as well as affordable home deep cleaning services.

Even if you aren’t ready to give professional cleaning a try, everyone should know what deep cleaning truly entails. Let’s talk about it.

What Qualifies as “Deep” Cleaning?

This isn’t just a standard or “good” cleaning. Deep cleaning gets into all the nooks and crannies, going above and beyond to target hidden dirt, grime, and buildup.

Unlike a run-of-the-mill cleaning, a deep clean tackles…

  • The insides of appliances and cabinets
  • Inside your window frames
  • Your blinds & light fixtures
  • Ceiling fans
  • Baseboards and doorways
  • Doors and handles

Furthermore, a deep clean should encompass every room in the house, from the spare guest bathroom to the most trafficked hallways and dining spaces.

That’s a big undertaking – so how does one go about it? Let’s take a look at the three critical steps to ensure a successful deep cleaning session.

(1) Prepare

First things first: you need to have the right tools and cleaning solutions on hand.

Start by gathering suitable cleaning products for your countertops, floors, and other commonly used surfaces. If necessary, pick up specialized solutions for tougher stains or specific surfaces like stainless steel or glass.

Then, move on to building a collection of proper cleaning tools, such as scrub brushes, sponges, microfiber cloths, and mop heads. These will help you reach and effectively clean all of the different surfaces in your home.

Don’t forget about your protective gear, too. You’ll need gloves and masks when working with harsh chemicals or allergens.

If you want to kick your deep cleaning session into high gear, you may even want to consider renting heavy-duty equipment such as steam or carpet cleaners for deeper sanitization. This is another reason to consider outsourcing the job to professionals, who will already come armed with such tools.

Besides collecting your gear, preparing for a deep clean should also involve clearing clutter and organizing your home. After all, you can’t get into every nook and cranny if chaotic messes stand in your way.

(2) Work Room by Room

Once you’re adequately prepared, plan a systematic approach to the cleaning session. Most GIGO Clean professionals work room by room with a plan similar to this one:

Kitchen

  • Clean interior and exterior of appliances
  • Empty dishes from dishwasher/wash dishes
  • Disinfect countertops and backsplashes
  • Scrub and disinfect the sink
  • Vacuum and/or mop the floors
  • Empty the trash
  • Dust the top of the fridge
  • Clean reachable light fixtures
  • Dust windows, shades, and baseboards
  • Wipe down light switches and door handles
  • Dust and clean the doors

Bedroom(s)

  • Vacuum and/or mop floors
  • Wipe down light switches and door handles
  • Change the bedsheets
  • Dust all baseboards and window shades
  • Clean mirrors and nightstand surfaces

Bathroom(s)

  • Scrub, disinfect, and rinse the shower and tub
  • Disinfect the toilet (inside and out)
  • Clean and shine fixtures and countertops
  • Wipe down cabinet fronts
  • Scrub and disinfect sinks
  • Vacuum and/or mop floors
  • Empty the trash
  • Clean the mirrors
  • Wipe down light switches and door handles

Living Area(s)

  • Clean the windows
  • Wipe down light switches and door handles
  • Dust the baseboards and window shades
  • Clean any lamps and lampshades
  • Vacuum, fluff, and straighten cushions and pillows
  • Dust all flat surfaces and picture frames

Going room by room can prevent you from feeling overwhelmed and ensure nothing gets missed. If you want, you can even break up these categories into multiple days, instead of tackling the entire deep clean in one session.

(3) Know When to Seek Professional Help

Sometimes, you simply don’t have the time, energy, or expertise to deep clean your home – and that’s okay. In these cases, it may be worth looking into professional cleaning services.

Professional cleaners possess the skills, experience, and specialized equipment needed to tackle everything from tough stains to chaotic, disorganized spaces. Not only can they save you time and energy, but they can ensure a more thorough, effective cleaning for your home.

If you want to stay on top of your home’s sanitization, consider scheduling home deep cleaning services at least twice a year – perhaps more if you have pets or children running around. This will help your home stay healthier and safer in between deep cleans.
